the attack. the obama administration initially blamed it on protests over an anti-muslim video. that story later shifted, raising questions about what the administration knew and when they knew it was actually a terrorist attack. >> i don't think that the intelligence community, in any way, politicized the intelligence they were providing to members of the administration or congress. i think they gave us their best initial assessments. >> reporter: when petraeus testifies today, he's expected to give a timeline of events leading up to and during the attack. there's been a lot of focus on petraeus' affair and whether his conduct compromised national security. petraeus isn't expected to talk about that, but solely about the benghazi situation. lawmakers say once they complete the hearings on the benghazi attack, they expect to hold a public hearing to disclose any information that isn't classified. rob and paula? >> in the hot seat in more ways than one. preteti arla, live for us in washington. thanks, preeti. >>> and today in washington, president obama holds critical meetings with lawmaker

. subsequent to this we found out of day one, the obama administration, the intel community, even knew it wasn't video, it was the terror attack. why would petraeus do it? was there something held over his head where he said go out there and say video? otherwise we'll blow it wide open. that is a theory. >> greg: obama should arrest the director of "fatal attraction" and say it caused her to go after paula broadwell. maybe petraeus didn't want to say certain things in the testimony. >> dana: he finally said, if broadwell had the final interview the week before the election. can you manual wha imagine the t the f.b.i. who had to con front david petraeus. what it's like to say by the way, sir, we know you've been having an apair with the biographer, because there is another woman upset about it. i wonder if he knew all along. i don't believe he was given a polygraph test when he went to afghanistan, running afghanistan to being the c.i.a. director. i'm not sure if it's out of line, but it seems to me a problem. >> kimberly: there should be in terms of how they hand this, the protocol to go in an

by the obama administration to cover up what really happened in benghazi but if you watched any other news source over the past week, you wouldn't have heard these bizarre and counterfactual tales. the reason for this is my next guest will tell you those who get their news solely from right wing media are trapped in a bubble where no facts get inside. here to tell us about the g.o.p. bubble is bill maher the host of hbo's real time with bill maher. it is a genuine pleasure to have you on the show. >> always great to be with you. >> eliot: thank you. did reality and the fake reality of the right wing finally collide on election day and did karl rove melt down in front of us and show he couldn't deal with reality? >> i think that's what we saw there in real time to beg a phrase. on tuesday night. it was a pleasure to watch. yes, this was the last thing that could have done it to them. before this, there was always polling. they lived in their bubble. we had that bit as you pointed out on our show for oh, over a year. we woul

administration had given to blacks, hispanics and young voters during obama's first term. obama, romney argued, had been very generous, quotes around it, to blacks, hispanics and young voters. i once heard a canadian election saying they lost election to people that wanted to stay as part of canada because of ethnic voters. that means not french, not english. this guy, paul ryan who i don't think is right for prime time yet by any means talking about the urban vote. now, they won the other side because they got the most votes. because they won fair and square, which is the first thing ryan said. why do you have to step on his own headline. they won fair and square by saying, oh, it was the black vote. basically, that's what he's saying. >> chris, let me just say, as for romney's comments, i'm still waiting for my gift. i'm waiting for my gift from obama. i haven't received my gift yet. >> where is it? >> maybe it was lost in the mail. >> you may have voted for him without getting that thing in the mail he was supposed to send everybody? >> maybe chris has it. >> i did not get my gift. let me j

11th attack on the u.s. mission in libya, his testimony now raises more questions about the obama administration's account in the days after the assault. chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge reports from capitol hill. good evening. >> thank you, the former cia director is used to coming in the front door and today shunned reporters and entered the loading dock and briefed the house and senate intelligence committee. the former cia director was pushed to explain why today he said he believed it was terrorism from the start when on september 14th, according to a senior republican in the house, the directors emphasis was on the anti-islam film. >> his testimony today was that from the start he had told us that this was a terrorist attack, a terrorist involved from the start. i told him my questions i had direct questions. >> one democrat said the disagreements come down to a basic issue. >> the more significant issue was the element of planning and who was responsible and that wasn't clear. to what degree this was planned. >> a congressional source familiar with this w

democrats and republicans. republicans are critical. they believed the obama administration should have known right away this was not as spontaneous attack. they want to know who knew what, when. did the president know about the attack? when did his national security team know about the attack? there were people in tripoli and libya with the state department saying there was not enough security concerns because of some of the things going on in libya at the time. good >> the senators made remarks about you in ambassador susan rice. what did they say? >> basically, they do not trust her. they think she should have known better. it looked to be a spontaneous response. they think it is clear there was an organized element. the white house is saying, and today we heard from a democrat who said the intelligence community reaffirmed that was the best information they had at the time. she was repeating the information they provided her. now those intelligence committees, they will hear from david petraeus. what do they want to know from former director petraeus? >> they said this was going to

spectacle yesterday of missiles being launched into tel aviv. the obama administration has been supportive of israel. you've seen a lot of condemnation of israel by the nonalign movement led by iran. you would expect iran to twist the facts here. it will be a problem for the wider region if there is a war in gaza, obviously. it brings in the uneasy peace between egypt and israel, camp david accords we shepherded in 1979. egyptian prime minister is in gaza today. there's a three-hour truce. israelis have agreed not to strike while the prime minister is there. the israelis have been very careful to say publicly we want to maintain the peace treaty with egypt. i don't think the egyptians or hamas should be under any delusions here, if hamas rockets continue to be fired into israel, israelis have the responsibility to protect their population. >> egypt has reached out to president obama and the united states saying help us stop the violence there. so, ken, the united states is going to get sucked into this, regardless? >> no, i don't think the united states is going to get sucked in. they've p

from an election to have a terrorist attack that will expose the errors in policy of the obama administration. that is why they were so worried under that theory about in many that, in fact, this was al qaeda or another terrorist group. megyn: some democrats who were privy to these briefings, including representative adam smith say that the notion that a talking points were changed is completely wrong. still, we get diametrically opposing information. thank you for being here. megyn: thank you we will speak with the israeli ambassador to the united nations about what is looking like a possible ground war in the city of gaza. stay with us. flavorboost.com. megyn: more breaking news on our top story today. israel reportedly closing a series of roads heading into gaza. that comes just moments after the reuters news service report. asking to mobilize some 70,000 israeli troops. just think about that. 75,000 israeli troops, in what is being called preparation to a likely invasion of that area. this is not good. this is not there, folks. earlier today, the first time since 1970, at l

said if you look at states where obama administration bombarded women with messages, you saw much bigger gaps. >> chris: senator bayh, you know, it's interesting because i was thinking of 2004 as welch pendulum swings back and forth. after 2004 when bush had issues, and he still won, democrats were disspirited. obviously four years later they came roaring back. what do republicans need to do? >> two elections i'm thinking of, chris, number one, four years ago 2008 when some parts of the democratic party said this is a vote for a new progressive era and left-leaning government. it turns out that wasn't quite the case. our party needs to be modest in the mandate we take away from it. we need togone from progressive center out. then 1988 from the republicans' perspective. democrat just lost two elections in a row to ronald reagan. what did we do? we nominated michael dukakis who is a fine man but a liberal from massachusetts. it took three beatings for to us realize you have to make common cause of moderates. that is the internal struggle the republican have to go through. true to pr

scandals, events and even acts of war that the obama administration worked to keep secret until after the election. on friday, three days after, we learn that david petraeus, the head of the cia, was stepping down because of an extramarital affair. first i want to say that david petraeus is one of a greatest genuine hero. he is the first general in generations to turn around a war america was losing to iraq and 2006 and 2007 and he helped divert defeat. and for general petraeus to do what he did when he was director of the central intelligence agency, it was triple problem inmatic and opened him up to blackmail. for people who say it's a private matter, you are simply wrong. you can't have the cia director of america involved in a fair. once the affair was revealed, there was not a question in petraeus's mind that he needed to resign. but the story doesn't simply end there. now the white house claims that the president first received information about the affair on thursday. but a source close to journallest ron kessler, who will join me in a few minutes, says that's highly unlikely,

, this was the obama administration's watergate. >> officials say petraeus's decision to leave the cia was entirely personal and had nothing to do with benghazi or politics. but that's not how fox news sees it. >> there's not many stories that could knock the president's reelection right out of the headlines. not many. we got one. >> are you assuming that's why they didn't tell the story until after the election? >> the plot thickens. >> the fact that his scandal wasn't mentioned prior to the election, that would have had an impact on the election. >> i suspect the tough chicago guys knew about this affair for awhile and held it in their pocket until they needed to play their card. >> the questions mount and mount and mount. was this covered up until after the election, which would compromise safety in favor of politics? which is disgusting. like that hasn't happened. >> the drone, fast and furious. >> all these things have been happening after the election. >> at lot of people have affairs and they don't have to quit. >> let's bring in richard wolffe, msnbc political analyst and executive editor o

more information from the obama administration on just what the heck happened in benghazi and around benghazi. he's scheduled to give a news conference at the bottom of the hour and we are going to have measure on that. our dana bash has been doing the best she can to take in all of the information. listen, this is tricky. so many of these stories are interconnected. there is a lot of reporting. not all confirmed, but u maybe just start with this. how has this matter worked out that general petraeus will indeed show up on capitol hill and testify voluntarily? >> well, it started with the senate intelligence chairwoman, dianne feinstein telling us yesterday that that was her desire. in her words, that's a big stone left unturned if petraeus doesn't come up here and tell members of congress what he knew about what went on in benghazi, so that's where it started. then late yesterday, members of the senate intelligence committee met and decided it was imperative to invite him. dianne feinstein told our ted barrett that petraeus has said he will come talk to the senate intelligence commit

tell fox director petraeus was wedded to the explanation of the obama administration that it was linked to the video and a demonstration that spun out-of-control. this is in stark contrast to a briefing on september 13, from the f.b.i., where they were told the evidence pointed to al qaeda. >> the documents we see that the c.i.a. had, the information they had, prior to general petraeus coming in it is impossible to believe he thought he was giving us honest testify. >>reporter: through the personal contact the general has insisted the resignation was not connected to ben goes. >>shepard: and the calls for a special committee? >>reporter: right now we have three tracks to the investigation: the first track is the warnings, the request for supreme court by the consulate that were denied before the attack. the second track is the administration's statement that it was a demonstration that spun out-of-control and response to the video. and, now, the third track, whether former director petraeus the statement to congress of the attack was impacted by the knowledge he was the focus of an f.b

americans and how the obama administration dealt with it. when general petraeus first briefed congress, he said he believed the cia believed the attack stemmed from a protest. but today it's a different story. he said he believed it was a terrorist attack after the hearing this morning some republicans said they are very frustrated with the conflicting information. >> he also stated that he thought all along he made it clear that there was significant terrorist involvement. and that is not my recollection. >> petraeus resigned over an extramarital affair. he has insisted the affair did not put national security at risk and no classified information was shared. we will stay on this story for you this morning and have the latest on ktvu. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. >>> time right now 6:19. more bart trains are needed because so many more people are riding bart. the san francisco examiner reports bart expects to have a half million passengers a day riding bart trains in the coming years. and bart is going to need about 880 train cars to carry them al

altered his testimony about benghazi because members of the administration or someone knew about this affair and effectively blackmailed him to tailor his testimony about benghazi so it would suit the obama administration? >> no. i don't think so. you have t to know david petrae. he would not have done that. in fact, i would suspect that if somebody had tried to black mail him or influence him a certain way, he would do the exact opposite anden come out and let everyone know. he's testified before congress numerous times. i was with him during five of those times, and he will tell it straight forward the way it is based on the information he has at that time. we know truth changes over time a little bit as you get more information. >> so you think that's what's happening now, he's just finding out more through the fog of war about benghazi? >> well, i think over time more and more information becomes available. i wasn't at the testimony yesterday. i don't have the need to know or the clearance to know any more, and he wouldn't have told me exactly what he said anyway because he d

the affair and effectively black mailed him to taylor his testimony about benghazi so it would suit the obama administration? >> no, i don't think so. you have to know david pert - petraeus. he would not have done that and i would suspect if somebody tried to black mail him or influence. he would come out and let everyone know. he testified before congress numerous times. i was with him in five of those times. and he will tell it straight forward based on the information he had at the time. >> we know it changes over time. >> you he's finding out more in the fog of war through about the benghazi. >> i think over time more and more information becomes. i was not the testimony. or he wouldn't have told me what he said . i have to leave it there. thank you for coming out and speakingitous. eye spirited debate. and much more on general petraeus and the probe we labeled benghazi gate. 's decision overturns two previous court rulings allowing the case to proceed. the obama administration has followed the bush administration in seeking the lawsuit's dismissal. your response to these developments? >> this is an extremely common development, unfortunately. congress, media, the citizenry to relish the federal judiciary is probably the most disgraceful since 9/11. they're supposed to be the branch that was designed to hold the last couple executive branch accountable. the most shocking is not that they did not -- the most amazing fact is not a single victim of the war on terror abuses have been allowed even to have their day in court, let alone to achieve justice. in each and every case, the courthouse doors have been slammed in their face by having either claims of radical secrecy or government immunity, the idea our government officials are immune from the law, from any consequences, even when they commit the most egregious crimes. i think that is what history will view as the most profound failure. >> thank you for being with us, glenn greenwald his latest book, "with liber

. it's certainly a huge deal for the obama administration. we have new details about when and how the president was told about the allen bombshell. and the latest development, our chief white house correspondent jessica yellin is joining us now. jessica, first of all, what are you learning? >> hi, wolf. we understand that the president was first told there might be trouble with general allen and this investigation on friday, when the white house's counsel office was notified that there could be trouble with his nomination to become nato supreme allied commander. then on monday evening, the president was notified that secretary of defense leon panetta has referred to matter to the defense department's inspector general. keep in mind, now, according to the timetable, the president had also just been told on thursday about general petraeus' indiscretions, so it must have been an awful lot to take in all in one week, right after the election. secretary -- press secretary jay carney says, though, it was out of the white house's hands, this time frame, for their notification. listen to

to the intelligence assessment. >> general, we have the gop still suggesting that the obama administration concealed the fact benghazi was a terror attack for political reasons. from what we have learned from general petraeus's testimony, doesn't it seem the administration held back information, if they did so it was because a genuine national security concern existed? >> well, you know, my take on this, alex, this is centralist political posturing inside washington. the problem was we had inadequate ground security there. that's a state department function, not cia. when the thing went bad we had this am bass do, bilingual in arabic, he shouldn't have been there. that was the problem. but -- characterized the mob was minutiae for good next sakes. libya is a mess. there's no government, no army. it's not a success. probably better than having that monster gadhafi and his family in charge of it. but that's the problem. they have to get their eyesight up. we've got a war in afghanistan going that's running us $6 billion a month and several hundred killed and wounded a month. and here we're focused on

i said, if you look more at the states where they -- the obama administration bombarded women with messages, you saw a much bigger gap. >> chris: it is interesting, because i was thinking of 2004 as we'll, the pendulum swings back and forth and after the 2004, which bush obviously had a lot of issues and, still won, the democrats were disspirited and four years later came roaring back, what do republicans need to do. >> two issues i'm thinking of, number one, four years ago, 2008, when some parts of the democratic party said this was a vote for a new progressive era and more left-leaning government and turned out that that was not quite the case and our party needs to be fairly modest then mandate we take away from this and governor from the center-out, progressive center, one and two, i'm thinking of 1988 from the republicans' perspective. democrats had lost two elections in a row to ronald reagan. and what did we do? nominated michael dukakis, a fine man but a liberal from massachusetts and the internal struggle republicans will go through, they have to be true to their prin

it tell us about the whole approach, the light footprint that the obama administration recommended. >> chris: what would that be? i haven't heard that phrase until today. but it is in the papers. >> the idea that once we had gadhafi out in libya, we weren't going to go in with a big new presence and huge new diplomatic installation and we were going to try and do more sort of with less as it were. >> chris: not in libya... >> and that is being applied across the region as well. >> chris: it is interesting, up to this point, secretary of state clinton has kind of avoided much fire of libya. she said that she was taking responsibility for it, but that was in the middle of the night, at an interview down in south america. and she has been absent from the hearings, so far. as they focus, maybe less on the timeline and more on the question of why these diplomats were so undefended, so vulnerable, with all the warnings before hand, could secretary clinton come under fire. >> she'll have to answer questions, but i imagine what she'll say is they didn't realize how vulnerable they were and

at the performance of susan rice, among others, and the obama administration, and so, harry reid sent a letter yesterday and told john mccain he is not going to get the special committee he wanted. but i think the administration simply is going to have to watch republicans spend their energy on this. david petraeus tried to make the argument, defending susan rice, that she was repeating talking points, that she'd been given for the reason that the administration did not want to alert terrorist groups that we knew that they were behind the attack. i'm not sure that that's going to quiet the criticism. we're just going to have to see how long it plays out. >> you saw the meeting yesterday with the president and congressional leaders on the fiscal cliff. how confident are you that a compromise will be reached in a timely fashion? >> pretty confident, actually, alex. you know, i thought the outcome of that meeting was about as positive as you could hope to see from a bipartisan meeting of congressional leaders with the president of the united states, all four leaders, pelosi, mcconnell, reid, boeh

gears and talk about jobs. the obama administration repeatedly asked defense contractor not to comply with t with it and warn they might be laid off in advance of cuts and of course recently boeing laid off 30% of its management force and other companies are expected to do the same. do you think the president played politics with these job cuts? >> i don't know if he played politics, but i know this. if you understand defense appropriations that that $600 billion in the sequestration, most of it is in research and development and procurement. only 15% of any procurement contract or research and development is spent in the first year. so the immediate cuts from this don't have very much impact. second, when people talk about jobs, the defense and aerospace association said there would be a million jobs lost if that $600 billion went into effect. you know what? s.e., there's only 3.5 million bornste jobs in defense in the aerospace industry, that including 757s. they're going to lose 33% in one year of their entire work force because of a 10% cut in defense? weren't a job welfare progra

of the obama administration knew it was going on, they buried it until after the election and going on and on and on and on. does that matter? >> well, i don't know if it's true. if it's true i guess it does. they have managed to bury the benghazi story. the media has said since romney didn't bring it up, they didn't feel any obligation to bring it up. if they put that past the election and they put this petraeus thing past the election. this second term is going to be pretty ugly people not going to go away. >> it won't be the bad guys some indication that his whatever you want to call her, his friend may have made a speech and given away some secret information that she may or may not have gotten. >> bill: only thing that could happen is if holder gets dragged into this because he may because he obviously overseas the fbi and he knew what was going on and if he see that he bury it and got fast and furious on his resume. >> you can bury certain things for only a certain amount of time. and second terms are not kind to second term presidents. i think coupled with the stagnant econom

this morning that the obama administration doesn't really see petraeus as their guy. he served in multiple administrations has the backing of a lot of republicans but with him now testifying before the senate intelligence committee tomorrow is this where the white house could start to feel more the heat? >> absolutely. i mean, look, he was somebody else's pick but he did serve as somewhat of a sense of continuity for the administration serving multiple posts under the president. i would imagine most of the press corps will want to talk to the president and get him on the record about some of these issues. the attorney general of the united states along with the head of the fbi were investigating david petraeus for six months and the president didn't know about it? that's going to be a very interesting and hard-hitting question to put before the president then when petraeus goes before congress to discuss benghazi, i imagine some of these questions might come up again and people will try to get them in some type of cross fire amongst each other and there will be plenty of blame to go around

to the bottom of it. what republicans are saying is the obama administration has put out very conflicting stories about what happened in benghazi, when they knew about it, what they did about it and how they sort of perpetuated the idea this was a spontaneous attack. so the republicans on capitol hill are saying we only need to get through the double talk. get to the bottom of what happened. we lost an american am bas dpor. three other americans. president obama said i did everything i could as soon as we found out this is happening. then how come the whole place was left completely undefended? there's so many big ands of questions. that's what senator mccain was getting at yesterday when he said let's put together a committee that can look at this specifically, rather than having it scattered and half a dozen committees looking at it. this may give us a better answer faster. that's ultimately what everybody wants to keep the americans safe abroad and in the future. >> is this part of the mccain and obama conflict from 2008? >> i think mccain -- right after obama was elected in 2008, mcca

when the obama administration what prompted the attack. a spontaneous recognition to an anti muslim video, or terrorists >> then the cia director pretorius 3 km in september. now, impressions of that meeting are mixed. >> so much of this confusion arises because of the difference between what is classified and what is not classified. he has told us that this was a terrorist attack or if there were a terrorist involved from the start. i told him my questions, had a very different recollection of that. >> congre congressman's askiking said petraeus testified he had no to wreck involvement in developing the top ones used by susan rice. in early days after the attack the u.n. ambassador to the united nations pointed to the film as a potential cause. >> the key is that there were unclassified talking points at a very early stage. >> jacqueline: reporters are sat lawmakers are saying that- for transgendered was asking little about his affair with biographer paula broadwell anything that occurred with respect to disperse the situation has nothing to do with the way he handled benghazi at a

't we have to say that if obama believes what he actually said during the recent political campaign? >> well, i agree with that. of course the administration wants to have it both ways because that's the nature of diplomacy. it's going to let the israelis get a green light here, but they're going to then stop the israelis from doing what essentially is to finish the job. after all, hamas is the equivalent of the khani network. if it works for the united states to use drones and to attack the terrorists that are attacking the american troops, what's good for the goose is good for the gander here. larry, but at the same time you know the game. the administration is going to recognize that the egyptians are going to be placed in a position of having to do something if the israelis do invade, and the americans have a strategic interest, as of course the israelis do, of preserving the egyptian-israeli peace treaty. and that's -- >> but the israeli forces can bottle up gaza and stop egyptian weapons from getting through. they can do that, can they someone. >> yeah, well, that's the proble

on the outside, everything looks calm but behind closed doors, an administration in panic dealing with the petraeus sex scandal that threatens to spin out of control less than one week after president obama's re-election. big questions tonight. what did the white house know and when did it know it. the four-star general has said to be devastated about the scandal, sparked by his affair with his biographer, paula broadwell, uncovered during an fbi investigation. the bureau was looking into so-called jealous e-mails purchase reportedly send by broadwell to kelley, a petraeus family friend. tonight, the "washington post" has reported that as president obama rearranges his national security team, it is considering asking senator john kerry to serve on the team and the fbi agent was barred from taking part in the case for allegedly sending shirtless pictures of himself to a woman involved in the case. meanwhile, the ghost writer of broadwell's book, vernon loeb, says he was clueless about the affair between petraeus and broadwell. here with the latest on the scandal that keeps getting

-end tax cuts expire. what obama had been campaigning on and what voters want overwhelmingly. so you know, the administration has actually been fairly optimistic about where boehner is and negotiating with boehner and negotiating maybe with some of the rank and file who are more likely to come to an agreement. maybe go into the senate. and doing this very publicly. they're meeting with a lot of groups with labor groups, with business groups and they've learned their lesson. this idea that in 2011 last year, they could just sit in a room with boehner, hatch out a deal and all would be done. clearly didn't work out very well. after the election, i think the president feels he has a mandate on these issues. if it doesn't work out, it is a great opportunity for him to go use the pulpit, travel the country, sell the ideas and apply public pressure to boehner to give a bit. >> bill: yeah. can we say hello here to sir calling from fort worth, texas. good morning. >> caller: good morning, mr. press. how do youing? >> b

that obama was unaware of the investigation but also the culture in washington where trusted officials are behaving badly. all this is placing a lot of pressure on the president's team. not only will the administration need a new c.i.a. director, they'll also need to replace hillary clinton as circumstance of state and -- as secretary of state and there is talk of bringing in senator john kerry as secretary of defense. some conservatives are criticizing that decision, calling it an odd choice and saying he would do better as secretary of state. for that job though, the president is considering u.n. ambassador susan rice. g.o.p. strategist see this as a chance to re-examine the administration's handling of the attacks in benghazi. senior republican aide who spokane onomously to the "new york times" called rice the poster child for the idea of a white house cover-up. >>> the senate rarely rejects a cabinet pick but this could be a long and painful process ahead of president obama. more bill press is coming up after the brea
